The Sudbury Regional Competitive Soccer League said it is “thrilled” its annual summer tournament is reclaiming what the league vice-president calls its “original identity.”

This week, the league (SRCSL) announced the Caruso Club has returned as the main sponsor of its August tournament.

“The Sudbury Regional Competitive Soccer League (SRCSL) is proud to announce the official return of the Caruso Club Soccer Tournament, one of Sudbury’s most beloved sporting traditions,” the league said in a news release. “In partnership with the historic Società Caruso, the tournament will be restored to its original name and heritage, now officially known as Coppa Caruso.”

The tournament was founded in 1992 by the Società Caruso, which sponsored the tournament for 20 years until 2012. SRCSL revived the tournament in 2014 as the Sudbury Star Cup, a name it has maintained until now.

The league said having Società Caruso back “marks a significant and symbolic restoration of the tournament’s roots.”

"We’re thrilled to bring the tournament back to its original identity," said Cody Cacciotti, vice-president for the SRCSL in a news release. "The Società Caruso has played a historic role in the development of soccer in our region, and this partnership reflects our shared commitment to celebrating that legacy while creating exciting new opportunities for competition and community connection."

The league said the rebranding is part of an effort to “re-establish cultural ties with the many ethnic communities that have supported and shaped” soccer in Greater Sudbury.

“I am beyond excited to announce our return as the proud title sponsor of the Coppa Caruso.  This partnership reflects our ongoing commitment to community, sportsmanship, and celebrating the vibrant spirit that unites us all,” said Stephanie Sindori, Società Caruso president, in a news release.

In addition to the support provided by the Società Caruso, the annual competition will also receive significant sponsorship over the next five years from David Anselmo and the Northern Ontario Film Studios.

“I am honoured to support an event that not only showcases exceptional athletic talent but also strengthens our community’s bonds,” shared Anselmo. “This tournament stands as a rich cultural testament to Sudbury’s rich soccer heritage, dating back over a century.”

The 2025 Coppa Caruso will take place Aug. 8-10 with divisions for Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Men’s Over 35, Men’s Over 45 and youth festival competition at the U10, U12 and U14 levels.

Prize money in the adult divisions includes $3,000 available to the winning club of the Men’s Open Division and $1,500 to the winner of the Men’s Over 35 Division. The victor of the Men’s Over 45 and the Women’s Open divisions, which are new additions to the tournament this year, will take home $500 each.
