Building on the momentum of a season opening figures competition last month, the Sudbury Synchro crew continued to shine in the provincial circuit, most notably in the 13-15 age group.
The local team of Megan Sarmatiuk, Emily Binks, Amy Lacelle, Laurel Duguay, Stacie Kohan, Bronwyn Ashley, Georgia Speck, Madison Hood, Sarah Ieropoli and coach Chelsea Wandziak shared gold medals recently, in a field of 17 teams, at the Waterloo Invitational.
Their score of 60.500 left the Sudbury girls dead even with the squad representing Toronto Synchro, with a number of the locals also enjoying success in the duet category.
Binks and Ieropoli combined to post a score of 59.667, finishing second only to a pairing from Waterloo and earning silver medals in the process. Duguay and Speck were hot on their heels at 57.667, good enough for fifth place (field of 20), much to the delight of their coach, Kristiina Muinonen.
Not to be outdone, their younger teammates are gradually working their way up the ladder, with the 11 to 12-year-olds sliding into fifth place in a 10 team division, scoring 51.167 despite having to make due one swimmer short due to illness.
The team of Lily Burns, Lana Squires, Maxine Lafleur, Chloe Cholette, Emilie Ladouceur, Maeve Caddel and Gillian Franklin are coached by Candice Larochelle.
