Dmitry Sokolov scored twice as the Sudbury Wolves beat the Barrie Colts on Saturday, capping 2016 off with a victory.

Ryan Valentini opened the scoring for the Wolves midway through the opening period Saturday. The power play goal was assisted by captain Kyle Capobianco and David Levin at 11:35. The Colts tied the game before the period came to a close on a goal by Giordano Finoro. Shots on goal after the first were 12-8 in favour of the Colts.

Sokolov gave the Wolves back their lead on a power play midway through the second with his team-leading 24th goal of the season to make it 2-1. The Wolves and Colts were knotted at 16 shots apiece by the end of the second period.

The Colts were relentless in the third period, out-shooting the Wolves 13-4. However, Sokolov rose to the occasion and sealed the win for the Wolves with his second of the game and a 3-1 victory for the Wolves. Final shots on goal were 29 to 20 in favour of the Colts.

Sokolov was named the first star in the contest, while Ryan Valentini was awarded second star for his performance. The Wolves were able to secure five of six points on the weekend and now sit atop the Central Division. They will continue on the road next weekend with stops in London, Sarnia and Guelph.
