Karolyne Blain may have endured just a smidgen of second thought when she originally committed to the Cape Breton University Capers women's soccer program back in 2011. It's a pretty safe bet those thoughts are now but a distant memory.
Despite leaving Sudbury for Sydney, NS, a very long haul for someone who was always extremely attached to family, friends, teammates and high school companions, Blain more than made the most of her time out east.
The magnitude of her impact with the Capers was made even more evident in late February, as the graduate of Ecole Secondaire Macdonald-Cartier would see her number (#13) retired and raised to the rafters of the Sullivan Field House.
Over the course of her five year career, Blain assembled a remarkable resume that included:
- all-time AUS leading goal scorer (women's soccer)
- two-time AUS Most Valuable Player
- three-time CIS All Canadian
- AUS Rookie of the Year
- five-time Academic All Canadian
- the first ever CBU student athlete to receive the James Bayer Memorial Scholarship
- two-time recipient of the President's Award
- two-time CBU Female Athlete of the Year
In 55 games played as a member of the Capers, Blain netted an amazing total of 53 goals, establishing the AUS single season scoring record along the way.
Now attending medical school at the University of Ottawa, Blain would help to lead Cape Breton to a pair of AUS titles during her time in Sydney.
