The 17U Northern Chill Subzero volleyball team is brushing up on their skills as they get ready to host the McGregor Cup Select B tournament on Feb. 5.

The Subzero squad is ranked seventh out of 124 teams in Ontario, and the McGregor Cup will bring the best teams to Greater Sudbury.

“It's the highest level of skill in Ontario for that age group,” organizers told Sudbury.com. “Sudbury doesn't often host the caliber of volleyball.”

Besides the Northern Chill team, participating volleyball squads include the Titans Rogue, Reach Harmony, Wildcats Panthers, Pakmen Gold Jessy, Phoenix Heat, Oakville Thunder Strike, Storm Typhoon and Caspian Rush.

Spectators are encouraged to do two things: 1. Come cheer on the local players, and; 2. Bring  non-perishable food items to donate to the Sudbury Food Bank.

“Come out to cheer on the 17U Girls and help us, in partnership with Laurentian University, freeze out hunger with your donation of a non-perishable food items,” the team said in a Facebook post.

Last year, the Subzero team placed second overall in Ontario at the Ontario Volleyball Association provincial tournament in Kitchener, facing the best teams from Halton, the GTA and across all of the province.

After the McGregor Cup, the team heads to Toronto for provincials in April and will be representing Sudbury at nationals in Calgary in May.
