U17 girls dig up fourth place in Ottawa

The second tournament action of the season produced some positive building blocks for the Northern Chill U-17 girls, though greater consistency in their play will be needed if the ladies are to make some serious noise in this grouping.
The second tournament action of the season produced some positive building blocks for the Northern Chill U-17 girls, though greater consistency in their play will be needed if the ladies are to make some serious noise in this grouping.

The squad finished fourth in a field of nine teams at an Ontario Volleyball Association Challenge Cup – Trillium event hosted in Ottawa on Jan. 12.

The team split their games in pool play, dropping the opener to the Ottawa Maverick Outlaws (21-25, 18-25), but regrouped in time to take down the Durham Attack Red in straight sets (25-18, 25-19).

With setter Kelsey Pitre serving with authority, left-side Emily Sanders making smart choices at the net and an increasing energy displayed across the board, the Chill were off to the quarter-finals.

In arguably their best game of the day, the locals used a strong serve receive and outstanding effort through the middle to subdue the Durham Attack Black 25-20, 22-25, 15-13. Unfortunately, the team could not duplicate that effort in the semifinals, upended 20-25, 19-25 by the Ottawa Maverick Trailblazers.

Relegated to the bronze-medal encounter, the Chill took the Northumberland Breakers to a third set before falling 21-25, 26-24 and 10-15.

The roster of the 2012-2013 version of the Chill U17 crew features Emily Clark, Alandria Czerkas, Stephanie Foucault, Amanda Kring, Lauren Kyle, Emily McDonald, Kelsey Pitre, Emily Sanders, Jillian Vallier, Manon Duhaime and coaches Craig Thomson and Amy Cliff.
