The Sudbury District Soccer Club (SDSC) U18 Girls continue to run roughshod over much of the Central Girls Soccer League (CGSL) opposition.

Playing a pair of games at home, the Sudbury crew outscored the visitors 13-0, improving their league leading record to 5-0-2 (17 pts), one point better than Pickering.

The locals clobbered the Oshawa Kicks 9-0 on Saturday, as Brianna Scarfone led the way with a three goal effort. Chelsea Sargeant and Lina Audet chipped in with two goals each, while Miranda Zilkowsky and Morgan Melnek rounded out the scoring.

Melnek added two more goals on Sunday versus the Bradford Eagles, converting on a penalty kick and scoring the third tally of the game on a pretty invidual effort.

Bookending that strike were Zilkowsky, who split the Bradford defense nicely to increase the Sudbury advantage to 2-0 early in the second half, and finally a perfect header from Audet, left unmarked in the middle of the box following a corner kick.

Laurentian Voyageur prospect Josée Scott recorded back to back clean sheets for the SDSC ladies.

While the core of this team have played together for several years, there have been a few additions mixed in, as player retention becomes problematic in the late teens.

Zilkowsky has suited up with the Valley East Soccer Club since the age of three, competing at a recreational level, before garnering some additional exposure with the Confederation Chargers high school team.

"It's a lot faster," said Zilkowsky, after netting her third goal in as many games. "Everyone here plays together, if that makes sense. When I played in the Valley, it was one on one, not really playing as a team."

Out for the entire summer of 2015 with a broken collarbone, Zilkowsky finds herself splitting time with Sargeant at striker, her most common position from her days with the VESC.

"I don't think I'm that strong in the back," she said. "I've gotten a lot faster over the years, so I use my speed to my advantage."

Sudbury will wrap up their regular season schedule on the weekend of Aug. 6 and 7, taking to the road for a key matchup with Pickering, and closing off with Glen Shields (2-3-0) the next day.

The team will, however, see action this coming weekend, having advanced through to the semi-finals of CGSL Cup play.

The girls are in Whitby for a 10 a.m. encounter on Saturday, playing again at 2 p.m. if they emerge victorious in the morning.

Impact U21 Women

The Greater Sudbury Soccer Club (GSSC) Impact U21 Women kept their hopes for a first place finish in the OWSL (Ontario Women's Soccer League) alive this weekend, defeating the Kitchener Spirit 4-1 on Saturday, and blanking Bryst Academy 3-0 on Sunday at James Jerome.

Both teams traded chances early in the opener, before Sarah Cholewinsky broke the ice in the 29th minute. Jumping all over a misplay by the Spirit defender, Cholewinsky stole the ball, waltzed in and made no mistake in tight.

Cholewinsky was front and center again on goal two, gaining a step on the Kitchener outside defender, before being taken down from behind. Sudbury veteran Kaitlin Houben was called upon to take the ensuing penalty kick, doubling the Impact advantage in the process early in the second half.

That tally seemed to open the floodgates, as the homeside added a pair of goals just four minutes apart in the 67th and 71st minutes, with Brianne Rodrigue bouncing a shot high up over the visiting keeper, before Cholewinsky netted her second of the game, moments after re-entering play.

Cholewinsky drilled home her third and fourth goals of the weekend against Bryst, with Rodrigue adding the other, and Megan Coutu earning the clean slate.

"I think in the first half, we were pretty slow," said Houben after the Saturday affair. "We seem to be a second half team. We're trying to get that out of us. Once we got another goal, we started to break them down."

A stalwart on the back end with the Impact, Houben completed her freshman season with the Cambrian Golden Shield last fall, set on fine-tuning her game over the summer in preparation of year two of OCAA soccer.

"For me, it's mostly about getting better at winning the ball in the air," she said. "I've never been great at that. I'm short, so that doesn't help."

Still, she is excited to be joined by her younger sister, Kianna, who committed to the Cambrian squad earlier this summer.

Coach Dayna Corelli and company will likely need to finish off the season with a pair of road wins this coming weekend to secure top spot, facing a winless Waterloo United side, but in tough against Premier Soccer Institute (PSI) from Barrie, a team which doubled the locals 4-2 when they first met last month in Sudbury.

Impact U13 Girls

The Sudbury (GSSC) Impact U13 girls travelled to Richmond Hill on the weekend, taking part in the Kickin' it on the Moraine Tournament, and returned home extremely pleased with the level of play that they faced in all four games.

The local ladies opened with a 2-0 win over North Durham United, as Kelsey Dunn found the back of the net twice for coaches Paul Favero and Matt Binks, while Michela Bussolaro recorded the shutout.

Another nice showing in game two, as Bussolaro continues with her streak of whitewashes, while Isabelle Cotnoir pulls the trigger in a 1-0 win. Despite a 2-0 loss to the Southwest Fury, the Impact still managed to secure top spot in their pool.

Unfortunately, they would hit the end of the line on Sunday morning, suffering a 1-0 loss to Markham in semi-final action.

Royals U14 Girls

The Sudbury (SDSC) Royals U14 Girls came through with a big weekend on the road, picking up a win and a tie in Huronia District Soccer League play. Katie Chomiak and Allie Weiler found their way on to the scoresheet on Saturday, as the Royals played to a 2-2 with the Richmond Hill Raiders.

The contest provided the locals with plenty of confidence moving forward, as Sudbury exploded offensively some 24 hours later, tripling Lake Simcoe SC 6-2. Weiler paved the way for the Royals with a three goal effort, with Chomiak, Olivia Gingras and Haylee Lavigne adding one goal each.

Coach Maurice Ferron and the girls hold down first place in the HDSL North Division with a record of 4-2-1. The top three teams in the North will play the top three teams in the South Division in a one-game showdown on September 10th, with the three winning teams promoted to the CGSL in 2017.

Impact U21 Men

The Sudbury (GSSC) Impact U21 Men dropped their third straight game by a single goal, as FC Durham Academy slipped past the locals 3-2 in Oshawa. John Hick and Nicholas Walker found the mark for the Impact, who are back on the road on Saturday, battling the Kleinburg Nobleton SC Lions.

Strikers U18 Girls

The Sudbury (SDSC) U18 Strikers dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Collingwood, as Christine Kettle and Deanna Krueger scored for the locals. Kristian Shuttleworth buried the hat trick as the Sudbury (GSSC) Impact U18 Boys bounced West Toronto 4-2, with Danish Butt completing the scoring for the locals.
