Voyageurs ski team shows well at Ontario Cup race

A number of Laurentian Voyageurs Nordic Ski team members put in strong performances at the Ontario Cup No. 2 race series held at the Naughton ski trails over the weekend.

On Jan. 19, it was the individual start classic race and there were a number of high finishes for the Voyageurs. Petri Bailey was first among senior men, just 2.3 seconds ahead of second place, while Andrew Kendall came in 13th.

On the women's side, Candace Ball came in second place in the senior women category with Karyne Carriere coming in eighth and Dani Buckner finishing 12th. Charlotte van Walraven was third in the junior women category.

On Jan. 20, the mass-start freestyle race took to the trails.

Bailey continued his strong weekend, finishing fifth on the senior men's side with Kendall coming across the line in 16th.

On the senior women's side, Ball reached the podium again with a third-place finish while Buckner came across in 13th.

In the junior women's category, van Walraven was on the podium for the second day as well as she skied across the line in second place.

The team will continue to hit the trails in preparation of the OUA Championships Feb. 22-24 in Thunder Bay.
