The Greater Sudbury Cubs opened their preseason at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.

The newly named Greater Sudbury Cubs opened their preseason with a 2-1 victory against the French River Rapids on Sept. 12 at Countryside Arena.

A near-capacity audience of 350 fans attended the game that saw the Rapids jump out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Sudbury Wolves draft selection Levi Siau.

After a scoreless second period, the Cubs got on the board with Pierson Sobush tying the game at the five-minute mark of the final frame. Goaltending was solid on this night with Joel Rainville of the Cubs making some outstanding saves throughout the contest.

Cubs’ defenceman Carter Geoffroy electrified the crowd with 2:22 left on the clock to give the Cubs the lead that they would not relinquish.

The game marked the first time the Cubs played a home game in their new home arena. A number of scouts were in attendance at the game, including Chris Roque of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Mark Seidel of the OHL’s Barrie Colts.

The Cubs make their regular-season debut on Thursday night when they host the Espanola Express at 7:30 p.m. at Countryside Arena. It will be the team’s first regular-season game since December 2020.

Attendance is restricted to 450 fans and fans must be fully-vaccinated to attend the game. Admission prices are only $10 for adults, $5 for juniors and seniors and children 12 and under are admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult.

Prior to the start of the game, the Greater Sudbury Cubs organization, along with team owner Mark Burgess, will honour staff representing the HSN emergency care department for their ongoing dedication and commitment to the health of our community.
