The Sudbury Nickel Capital fell 2-1 to the Lethbridge Hurricanes in their opening game of the 2018 Telus Cup on April 23.

Lethbridge got out to a quick start, building a 2-0 lead in the first period of the game and hanging on until the final buzzer. Kyle Buchanan opened the scoring for the Hurricanes at the 7:45 mark of the first period to give his team the lead.

Keegan McDowell doubled the lead with just over three minutes to play in the opening frame and the Hurricanes skated into the first intermission up by a pair of goals.

The game remained that way until very late in the third period, when Tommy Vlahos got the Wolves on the board with just 20 seconds to play, but it was too little, too late.

“I thought that we played well in the first period. We just want to get better every period. The second period we played well in spurts," said Hurricanes head coach Michael Dyck.

"In the third period, gotta give them [Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves] some credit, they made a push, and I thought we were inconsistent. I thought there were some shifts that we played really well, and other shifts that we didn’t. So we’re going to have to focus on that and bring a more consistent effort for tomorrow.”

Shots on goal were pretty even as the Hurricanes outshot Sudbury by a count of 27-22. The Wolves went 0/4 on the powerplay while Lethbridge was 0/3 with the man advantage.

Other action on opening day saw the Cantonniers de Magog defeat the Moncton Flyers 4-1. The Notre Dame Hounds got out to a winning start in their Telus Cup quest, beating the Toronto Young Nationals by a score of 5-3.

Tuesday's action will see the Young Nationals face off with the Cantonniers at noon. Lethbridge and Moncton will meet on the ice at 3:30 p.m.

The Nickel Capital Wolves are back on the ice at 7 p.m. this evening to take on the Notre Dame Hounds from Saskatchewan.
