Sudbury Wolves forward Kocha Delic potted the Pack’s only goal during regulation play in the team’s Jan. 11 shootout loss to the North Bay Battalion.

The defensive skills of both Sudbury and North Bay were in high gear as the Battalion came to town for a match against the Wolves on Jan. 11.

The low-scoring game saw a total of only 55 shots on net, but lots of action as the two teams struggled to overcome each other’s defence. Eleven penalties were called during the match (six for North Bay, five for Sudbury), and the Pack’s only goal during regulation time came on one of those power plays.

North Bay scored first and shorthanded at around the 11-minute mark, when Justin Ertel scored his 13th of the season to put the Battalion up 1-0.

Five minutes later on the power play, Matthew Mania and Alex Pharand would team up to feed Kocha Delic who capitalized and knotted the game at 1-1.

No other goals would be scored over the next two periods, nor over the five-minute OT period, so the game went to a shootout.

Sudbury had first crack during the shootout, with Delic hoping to add another to his nightly tally. The team’s would trade a total of six shots without scoring until Wolves’ forward Alex Pharand notched one to put Sudbury up by one, but North Bay’s Ty Nelson would tie things up on the very next attempt.

After Mania took his turn for Sudbury and was stymied, Battalion forward Kevin ‘Big Mac’ McDonald would score the game winner.

The loss drops the Pack’s record to 14-18-3-1, good enough for eighth place in the OHL’s Eastern Conference and 17th overall. The win improves North Bay’s record to 27-10-0-1, which puts them second in the Eastern and second overall behind the Ottawa 67s.

The Wolves are back in action at home tomorrow, Jan. 13, against the Flint Firebirds. Puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
