Wolves salvage weekend with big 5-1 win over Spitfires

The Sudbury Wolves made up for two losses to start the weekend by pummeling the Windsor Spitfires 5-1 Sunday night at the Sudbury Arena. Sophomore goaltender Kevin Beech got a rare start against Windsor, and was solid, making 29 saves.

Captain Zack Stortini lead the offensive charge by scoring two goals. Stortini has been picking up his scoring pace of late and now has 10 goals.

Adam McQuaid, Ryan McDonough and Devin DiDiomete also scored for the Wolves.

John Scott Dickson scored the only goal for the Spitfires.

The Wolves started their weekend at home on Friday night against the Plymouth Whalers.

The Wolves held a slim 2-1 lead going into the third period, but allowed the game to slip away in the third frame and extra period.

The Whalers stormed back and won the game 3-2 in overtime thanks to a goal by Dan Collins in the first minute of the extra period.

John Vigilante and Vaclav Meidl also scored for the Whalers.

Patrick Ehelechner made 27 saves for the Wolves in the loss.

Stortini and DiDiomete scored for the Wolves.

Sudbury then traveled to Barrie to play the Colts on Saturday.

The Wolves suffered a tough 2-1 loss to their divisional rival.

Bobby Chaumont scored the lone goal for the Wolves.

Ehelechner stopped 24 of 26 shots fired his way.

B.J. Crombeen and Scott Hotham, who netted the winner with only a minute left in regulation play, scored for the Colts.

Despite the results, the Wolves are still in third place in the Central Division with a record of 20-16-3-3, good for 46 points.

The Wolves are also tied for third in the Eastern Conference with the Mississauga IceDogs.

Today marks the trade deadline for all players. OHL teams have until noon to trade overage players, and 6 pm to make deals for all other players.

The Wolves are back in action this weekend for another three games in three nights.

On Friday, Jan. 14, they host the IceDogs at the Sudbury Arena. Game time is 7:30 pm.

The Wolves then hit the road for games against Peterborough on Saturday, and then take on the St. Michael's Majors in Toronto on Sunday.
