The Sudbury Wolves announced Wednesday that they have acquired forward Matej Pekar from the Barrie Colts in exchange for draft picks.

The 19-year-old is a native of the Turnov, Czech Republic and a prospect of the Buffalo Sabres.

Pekar was selected in the fourth round, 94th overall of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the Sabres.

The 6-1, 185 lb. forward was in his second season with the Colts prior to being acquired by the Wolves and has 16 goals and 13 assists for 29 points on the season. In 59 career OHL regular season games, he has 30 goals and 35 assists for 65 points and is +14 with 73 PIM.

He recently represented the Czech Republic at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.

“Matej is a player that we have really liked and coveted since scouting him in Oakland with the U16 team,” said Sudbury Wolves VP and General Manager Rob Papineau.

“He is a skilled high-compete player that is hard to play against and brings a pro attitude and approach to our team. He is a career over a point per game player in the OHL and has a great deal of experience representing his home country at international events.”

Pekar will join his new teammates in Barrie Thursday in time for him to face off against his former team as the Wolves visit the Colts at 7:30 p.m. Fans can tune into the live play-by-play on CKLU 96.7 and mixlr.com/sudburywolves.

Fans can also watch on OHL Live and Eastlink Channel 10 and 610. This Thursday, fans can also come out to Overtime Sports Bar and Grill to join in on the SWSE Watch Party as both the Wolves and Sudbury Five take to the road.

The party gets underway at 5:30 p.m. and there will be lots of fun and prizes for fans in attendance. Overtime will also have special offers throughout the night.

The Wolves will then return home to host the North Bay Battalion and Mississauga Steelheads this weekend in double-header action on Friday and Sunday at the Sudbury Arena. Friday’s game begins at 7:05pm and Sunday’s game starts at 2:05 p.m.

Tickets are on-sale now at greatersudbury.ca/tickets or sudburywolves.com.
