Ageing gracefully through movement

Moetus Health leads the movement to provide longevity to Sudbury's boomers

The number of older adults making their home in Sudbury is on the rise, and with good reason. Ours is a growing city with the right balance of urban amenities, vibrant activities and four-season beauty.

In 2018, Public Heath Sudbury & District reported that approximately 30 percent of the population was made up of boomers (45 to 64 years of age), with seniors aged 65+ comprising another 19%. Fast forward to 2022, and many of those boomers have neared or have surpassed the 65+ mark. Now, take into account the effects of the pandemic which saw even more people moving up from the GTA, and it’s easy to see how Sudbury is home to one of Ontario’s largest populations per capita of older adults.

Growth of this type can bring huge boons to a community, but is not without struggles. One of the most prevalent and most concerning is the lack of prompt healthcare available to Sudbury’s boomers. Moetus Health is answering that call with a variety of programs designed to promote active aging for older adults in Sudbury and surrounding communities, and ease the stress of searching for attainable healthcare.

Jenine Saunders, owner of Moetus Health in Sudbury, understands the challenges our older population faces. “We recognize that the baby boomers face complex issues as they transition into retirement, including seeking healthcare assistance” says Saunders. “Moetus Health has developed integrated comprehensive services that address this progressive and growing need in the short term and long term.”

The Moetus Health team of Physiotherapy, Somatic therapy, Nutrition, Kinesiology and specialized instructors offer a range of wellness services and classes including:

  • Restorative Yoga: Open the body and calm the mind through long-held, supported yoga postures. Discover where you habitually hold tension and become aware of how to cultivate conscious relaxation to genuinely slow down.

  • Hatha Vinyasa: Use breath as an anchor for movement as you move through Sun Salutations in invigorating standing sequence and floor poses, wrapping up with an integrative Savasana.

  • Qigong: Optimize energy within the body, mind, and spirit, while improving and maintaining health and well-being.

  • Suspension Yoga: Relieve joint pressure and improve flexibility with an energizing (yet relaxing) sequence that utilizes gravity to relieve aches and pains.

  • MELT: Each class has a different theme, with an underlying focus on fascia and the role of the nervous system on joint stability, muscle tension, and functional movement.

The class schedule offers a range of daytime and evening classes, with programs designed to promote a strong, healthy body for women and men of all ages.

Moetus Health passionately believes that movement is the route to a speedy recovery, improved health, and an overall sense of well-being. In fact, movement in and of itself may take the place of traditional medical and pharmaceutical treatments that people can wait weeks or even months to attain. Through movement and mindfulness, older adults become empowered to face both physical and emotional challenges.

“There is a preconceived notion that getting older means losing mobility. This is not true!” Saunders asserts. “Like Joseph Pilates said, ‘you’re only as young as your spine is flexible.’ We promote aging gracefully through movement.”
