École secondaire Macdonald-Cartier (ESMC) continues to support and promote the trades, which are in great demand in the job market, especially in the mining industry of Northern Ontario.

The fact is, almost every trade can be found in the mining sector. Carpentry, metal fabrication, electrical, plumbing, electronics and ventilation are just a few of the trades available within the industry. The Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MIHC) highlights that there are over 120 trades required to operate the sector.

For students who enjoy the practical side of learning the opportunity to grow and make good money, the trades are worth exploring.

And because an important goal for many is to achieve work-life balance, the trades provide a rewarding lifestyle that allows for movement, continued learning and family time.

Currently, ESMC has several partners, but it continues to work on building new relationships that will allow the school to acquire new equipment or co-op placement opportunities for its students.

ESMC students who are enrolled in the Mining Studies program and enjoy the trades will have the opportunity to reach many achievements throughout their studies.

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) in Mining Studies prepares students for the world of work in the north. The Ontario Ministry of Education promotes SHSM-Mining and emphasizes that the program enables students to build a foundation of sector-focused knowledge and skills before graduating and entering apprenticeship training, college, university, or an entry-level position in the workplace.

ESMC invites all students preparing to choose a high school next year to visit the school’s facilities via a virtual tour available on its website.

Ronald Poulin, mining studies program coordinator and student academic counselor says, “Interest is growing, so we encourage early registrations. Prospective students and their parents can contact the school directly to find out how to begin exploring careers in the mining industry or to be part of ESMC’s growing family.”
