Troy Thompson has worked his way up the ladder. The T2 Training Systems founder started working out at Sudbury’s “The Gym” as a 12-year-old, eventually worked there as a cleaner, went on to manage it, and has now owned The Gym since 2010.
In 2006, Troy launched T2 Training Systems, a specialized personal training program offered exclusively at The Gym, and recently won a sudbury.com Reader Favourite award.
The training program specializes in 30-minute workouts, designed to maximize results for the busy individual. The T2 approach is highly personalized, tailored to what’s right for each client.
The workouts can consist of circuits, supersets, giant sets, and tri-sets, depending on the size of the group, but they all focus on high-intensity and moving quickly.
If this all sounds intimidating, Troy assures that the atmosphere at T2 Training Systems might not be what you expect. “People are encouraging and help each other. Everyone knows that they all started somewhere. You can walk in being a beginner and not know much about exercise, and we all pitch in to help make people feel comfortable,” he says.
As life seems to get busier, fitting in an efficient workout is what Troy wants to assist his clients with— whether they’re overbooked professionals or overwhelmed parents. “You can get in shape and not have to spend your whole night doing it,” he says.
Troy believes in setting his clients up for success by teaching them how to use the gym and the equipment, instead of just pushing membership signups. “If I just gave you clubs and sent you to a golf course, you probably wouldn’t stick with it. You have to be taught.” He also educates members on the basics of program design, like balancing cardio, strength, and rest days, as well as prioritizing healthy nutrition.
His first T2 client is generally at 5AM and his last one isn’t until 8PM, yet Troy says he never once feels like he needs a break. He loves seeing not just his clients' fitness levels grow, but also their confidence levels. Plus, running a business in Sudbury has brought him into the community.
“Now that I’m 51 years old I know a lot of people, and the gym has brought me closer to so many people,” says Troy.
Troy is grateful to all those who participated in voting T2 Training Systems a Reader Favourite in the Gym category.
“It feels good to know that I’m helping people get in shape and it’s somewhere they want to be.”
