As of January 1, 2025, Ontario drivers face a major change: the threshold for mandatory police reporting of vehicle collisions has increased from $2,000 to $5,000 in property damage.
This means fewer minor accidents need to be reported to police—unless someone is injured or the total damage exceeds $5,000. However, your insurance provider may still require a report regardless of value, so check your policy.
The change reflects rising repair costs, inflation, and the growing complexity of modern vehicles. But the core process remains: drivers can report online or attend at the Collision Reporting Centre within 24 hours, bringing licence, ownership, and insurance documents.
Sudbury drivers should still document all collisions, even if they fall below the threshold. Photos, witness information, and written notes may be critical later—especially if injuries surface after the fact.
Importantly, all injury collisions must still be reported, no matter the property damage amount.
At Orendorff and Associates, Sudbury’s Own Personal Injury Lawyers, we encourage residents to stay informed, report all injuries promptly, and seek legal advice if hurt in a crash.
Your rights don’t change—only the reporting threshold has.
