Passed but not forgotten: Celebrating Mother's Day in remembrance

Whether you have experienced many Mother’s Days in remembrance or if this is your first one, there are several ways to make this day special

Mother’s Day is May 9th, and for many this is not a day of celebration but one of remembrance. A wise funeral professional once said, “Death does not end a relationship; it changes it.” Nowhere is this more evident than on Mother’s Day for the Canadians that will use this time to create loving tributes to their passed loved one. Whether you have experienced many Mother’s Days in remembrance or if this is your first one, there are several ways to make this day special.

Redefine Motherhood

Some women are raised by their biological mothers, other by adopted mothers. A grandparent sometimes takes on the mother role, as do aunts, older cousins, or even community members. Some men fill both parental roles as the children grow up, and some families have parents with the same gender. Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate anyone who filled that role in your life be it a teacher, parent, etc., so go ahead and celebrate whomever you call “mom.”

Lean In…or Not

Grief is part of the journey of life and Mother’s Day very emotional for those experiencing a loss. Expect, experience, and embrace the grief. It is natural and healthy to mourn. If you feel that your grief will be overwhelming on May 9, take proactive steps in booking time off work, having a friend or family member call to check in, etc.

For some, however, there is no grief due to the nature of the relationship. During this time, do not feel forced or obligated to pay tribute to the life. Instead, celebrate the other people in your life that bring, or have brought you inspiration and joy.

Share the Memories

If you are missing mom, doubtless others in your family and social circle are too. Organize an online chat or time for phone calls where you can share memories and stories.

Flowers for Remembrance

Flowers are more than decorative. Taking mom’s favourite flowers to her graveside or having them on your table during Mother’s Day is another way to connect with and celebrate mom on May 9. You can also gift her favourite flowers to other family members, or plant them in your garden for a summer-long tribute.

This year – and every Mother’s Day – Lougheed Flowers helps you celebrate and remember mom, no matter how you choose to mark the day. For caring, friendly service, contact Lougheed Flowers today.
