Residents of Sudbury, in Northern Ontario, can now avail themselves of the services of the region's newest osteopathic clinic, which opened in early January.

Manual osteopathic practitioner and owner of OsteoHUB, Calvin Knor, said osteopathic practitioners typically work in clinics with other therapists, such as physiotherapists, chiropractors and massage therapists. However, this clinic is solely focused on osteopathy.

“What makes us a go-to spot is that patients are not waiting months and months to get help, and if something comes up between visits, we have ‘Fix-It Fridays’ for quick tune-ups,” Knor said.

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a form of hands-on healthcare that seeks to enhance bodily function and encourage self-healing. Practitioners employ manual techniques to evaluate and treat patients, centring on the musculoskeletal system while also considering the interconnected systems and their effect on overall health.

A distinguishing feature of osteopathy, as opposed to other healthcare disciplines, is its emphasis on identifying and treating the root cause of a problem instead of merely managing symptoms.

Knor said he was inspired to get into osteopathy after an experience with one growing up.

“I was an athlete growing up and was always injured, as most athletes are. The only thing that helped me was working with an osteopath. He sorted out some things nobody else could solve, and that’s what we’re dedicated to at OsteoHUB.”

Manual osteopathic practitioners, like Knor, strive to pinpoint the underlying mechanical or functional issues that contribute to a patient's symptoms and work to address those issues through manual techniques, lifestyle guidance, and patient education.

Rather than focusing solely on specific parts or systems of the body, practitioners regard the body as a whole interconnected system. They also consider other factors, such as the patient's environment, lifestyle and emotional state, as these can all impact bodily function and overall health.

Knor explained that he never chases symptoms. Instead, he uses the symptom to drive his diagnosis and works to ensure that all the patient's systems are working correctly.

"We're trying to move bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles that just aren't moving properly because of injury, repetitive movement patterns, or disease," he said. "We aim to restore circulation and bring health back to tissues to ultimately decrease pain and improve overall health.”

Osteopathy is a complementary healthcare practice. It can be used in conjunction with other forms of healthcare, such as medication or physiotherapy, to help enhance overall health and well-being.

The clinic now has three practitioners and is growing.

"Every three to four treatments, we rotate practitioners. Patients get the benefits of our individual expertise and collective experience which is helpful for patient care and building a community of people prioritizing their health," Knor said.

Osteopathy’s unique approach to healthcare has made it a popular choice for those who have exhausted other options. His goal is to get his patients back moving as soon as possible rather than being dependent on his services.

"Our goal is always to get patients moving well as soon as possible and empower them to learn more about their bodies so they can live long and healthy lives," he said.
