It is time to bid farewell to the iconic Sudbury superstack. Vale Base Metals is ready to complete the final phase of the $1 billion atmospheric emissions reduction (AER) project by dismantling the copperstack and superstack.

The Clean AER project has enabled Vale’s Sudbury Operations to eliminate 100,000 metric tonnes of sulfur dioxide emissions each year (equivalent to 1,000 railway tanker cars of sulphuric acid), bringing emissions down to 30% below the provincial standard. The superstack has been inactive since 2020, symbolizing significant progress toward cleaner air and a healthier environment.

Both chimneys will be carefully deconstructed over several years and will be done according to strict safety protocols. The copperstack will come down first and it is expected that this work will be completed by 2025. Planning and preparation are already underway to get the superstack ready for dismantling. This project is estimated to begin in late spring 2025 and last until 2028-29.

Farewell Superstack Commemoration Vote!

The skyline of Sudbury is about to change and that marks the end of an era for our city. In recognition of the superstack’s association with the area’s identity, Vale would like our community to decide how we commemorate the superstack's storied past.

That’s where you come in!

VOTE BELOW for how you think Vale should commemorate the superstack.

Each proposal aims to ensure that the superstack continues to resonate within the community it has long shaped.

Vale believes the people of Sudbury have a vital role to play in deciding which concept we should move forward with. The voting period will close at 4:00 pm on Friday, September 27. An announcement of the winning proposal will be made early October 2024 on Vale’s Facebook page.
