In a year all can agree was universally challenging, some local community leaders made sure to show their support for others.

The REALTORS®, who are all members of the Sudbury Real Estate Board (SERB), made monthly donations throughout the year. The funds collected were then sent to the REALTORS® Care Foundation, which is run by the Ontario Real Estate Association. One hundred per cent of those funds then come back to the Sudbury community in the form of grants to be distributed to local charities.

“Our REALTORS®, because we are leaders in our communities, do feel the need to step up, especially through the COVID-19 pandemic. We want to help people and businesses right here in our community,” says Tyler Peroni, SREB Chair.

REALTORS® in Sudbury are dedicated to helping their communities buy and sell homes, investment properties and commercial properties. Raising funds for shelter-related organizations is just a natural fit. It is proud to support the many hardworking local organizations whose efforts make such a difference to people in the community.

In 2020, all of the funds raised came from monthly donations from the board’s 375 members. Pre-COVID, there would have been some in-person fundraisers as well. The Foundation typically hosts fundraisers around the province, which members enjoy attending and helping out with.

The board is a strong believer in giving back and has been contributing to the Foundation as far back as Peroni can remember. Total fundraising in 2020 garnered $14,737.

How does the process work? “Any charity in Sudbury can apply directly to the REALTORS® Care Foundation,” explains Peroni. “It’s just a matter of filling out an application.”

This year’s recipients of the Sudbury REALTORS® Care Grant are:

Sudbury Women's Centre: $2,456.00

Sudbury Action Centre for Youth: $2,456.00

YWCA Sudbury: $2,456.00

Sudbury Hospice Foundation: $2,456.00

Sudbury Kinsmen Family Centre Foundation: $2,456.00

March of Dimes Canada Non-Profit Housing Corporation: $2,457.00

Typically, the board is able to do cheque presentations to the individual charities, though that has been put on hold due to the provincial stay-at-home orders currently in place. Members usually look forward to and enjoy the chance to meet with staff from the various foundations.

“All the feedback we get from our members is very positive. Everybody’s pretty proud, especially when they see that we’ve donated almost $15,000 this year. There’s a sense of pride you can definitely feel throughout the membership,” says Peroni.

Over the last 40 years, REALTORS® Care has granted more than 7 million dollars for shelter-based organizations throughout the province.

Says Peroni, “We are very proud of what we do and of our donation this year. We’re honoured to support local people that are in need.”

Grant applications are posted on the Foundation’s website in July for downloading and deadlines are September 30th of each calendar year.
