Sudburians come home from Skills Ontario with 11 medals

Members of Team/Équipe Sudbury won 11 medals at the Skills Ontario competition this week in Toronto.

Team/Équipe Sudbury has added to its growing medal count at Skills Ontario.

Team members won three gold, three silver and five bronze medals at the annual skills competition for elementary, high school and college students, which was held this week in Toronto. 

Skills Ontario features more than 70 categories, from animation to welding.

Team/Équipe Sudbury, powered by Manitoulin Transport, includes students, teachers and staff from Cambrian College, Collège Boréal, Rainbow District School Board, Sudbury Catholic District School Board, Conseil scolaire de Grand Nord and Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon.

The medal winners from the 2024 Team/Équipe Sudbury are:

Gold

  • Anny Garcia, Cambrian College, Graphic Design/Studio Production
  • Zacharie Brunette, Cambrian College, Heating Systems Technician
  • Evan Lafontaine, École secondaire catholique l’Horizon (Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon), Precision Machining

All three gold medalists have qualified for the Skills Canada national competition, May 30-31, in Quebec City.

Silver

  • Lucas Buchanan, Darek Grundt, Cambrian College, Powerline
  • Boston Renaud, Confederation Secondary School (Rainbow District School Board), Heavy Equipment Service
  • Harrison Hobbs, Cambrian College, Electrical Installations

Bronze

  • Logan Pigeon, Cambrian College, Metal Fabricator/Fitter
  • Riley Bowie, Cambrian College, Industrial Mechanical Millwright
  • Eric Murphy, Owen Van de Valk, Cambrian, Powerline
  • Van Provost, Sudbury Secondary School (Rainbow District School Board), IT Network
  • Olivia Horton, École secondaire catholique l’Horizon (Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon), Esthetics

Collège Boréal also won third place for best medium-sized booth at the event, while Evan Lafontaine also earned the Prize of Excellence for top-scoring Francophone competitor.

Since 2018, members of Team/Équipe Sudbury have won 42 medals at Skills Ontario: 10 gold, 11 silver and 21 bronze.
