Update: Sudbury man killed in Highway 69 collision

Driver of commercial vehicle that crashed and caught fire near Pointe au Baril was a 31-year-old man from Sudbury

A 31-year-old Sudbury man was killed in a collision on Highway 69 on Friday, May 31.

On May 31 shortly after 8 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police West Parry Sound Detachment, Britt and Area Fire Brigade, Parry Sound EMS responded to a single commercial motor vehicle that hit a rock cut and caught on fire near Flicker Road, on Highway 69 in The Archipelago Township. 

The driver, 31-year-old Johnathon Collins from Sudbury was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

Updated June 1, at 12:20 p.m. : It took most of the night but the OPP finally reopened Highway 69 near Pointe au Baril at nearly 5 a.m. this morning. No other information has been made available yet. More to come.

A tractor-trailer caught fire on Highway 69 on Friday evening, the Ontario Provincial Police reported.

The highway is closed near Pointe au Baril as police investigate and clear the scene, with a detour available via Highway 529.

No word yet on the cause or whether there are any injuries. This story will be updated when more information comes available.
