With the impending departure of Greater Sudbury Police Service Chief Paul Pedersen, the municipal police force is hosting an open competition to replace him.

In a media release issued by GSPS board on April 24, they announced they have decided to hold a competition open to both qualified internal and external applicants.

They have not decided on a timeline for hiring, though Pedersen is leaving on June 22.

Last month, Pedersen announced that he is leaving to accept an executive director position with the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police.

“It has been an honour to represent the people in this service who, day in and day out, serve this community with nobility, pride, and professionalism,” Pedersen said in a news release at the time.

“I want to thank this community for welcoming me and for the ongoing support of the Police Services Board over the years. It is with mixed feelings that I bring this chapter of my life to a close.”

Pedersen has served as chief of police since May 4, 2014.

During 2014, his first full year of service, the public sector salary disclosure (Sunshine List) notes that he was paid $211,409. Last year, his salary was $281,161 — a 33 per cent increase ($69,752) in nine years.

As of late morning on April 24, GSPS had not posted a job advertisement for the police chief position.
