79 COVID-19 cases reported in Northern Ontario in October

Health units for Sudbury, Northwestern Ontario each had 18 confirmed new cases

In October, 79 COVID-19 cases were reported in Northern Ontario.

The Sudbury-area health unit, and Northwestern Health Unit had the most confirmed cases, with each reporting 18. The Northwestern Health Unit also had one new probable case.

In September, 49 COVID-19 cases were reported by Northern Ontario health units. In August, 19 cases were reported.

The health unit in the Timmins area continues to have the highest rate of infection per 100,000 people.

According to data from the respective health unit websites and Public Health Ontario, the breakdown for Northern Ontario is:

  • Algoma Public Health reported 10 cases in October. That doubles September's cases, when five new ones were reported. At the start of October, the health unit covering Sault Ste. Marie, Blind River, Elliot Lake and Wawa had 33 confirmed cases. Oct. 31 it had 43. It now has 44 confirmed cases, with the latest being reported Nov. 1. There are currently three known active cases. The rate of cases per 100,000 population for the health unit is 37.6 up to Oct. 31.
  • The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit reported seven new cases in October. That's a slight increase from September when five new cases were reported. To date, the health unit has reported 47 cases. Of those, 46 are recovered and one person has died. The rate of cases per 100,000 population for the health unit is 34.7 up to Oct. 31.
  • The Porcupine Health Unit reported 15 new cases in October, which is a jump from September when 10 cases were confirmed. The health unit area covers Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Matheson, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, Hornepayne, and Moosonee. Eight of the October cases were in the Hearst, Hornepayne region. To date, there have been 99 cases in the PHU area. Of those, 82 are recovered and nine people have died. There are eight known active cases. The rate of cases per 100,000 population for the health unit is 117.4 up to Oct. 31.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts reported 18 new cases in October. In September the health unit reported 14 new cases. In total, it has had 127 confirmed cases, with the latest one being reported Nov. 1. Of the confirmed cases, 120 are recovered and two people have died. There are seven known active cases. The rate of cases per 100,000 population for the health unit is 63.8 up to Oct. 31.
  • The Timiskaming Health Unit lowered its total case number by one in October.  While one new case was reported, two cases were removed from its overall count and designated to other health units. To date, the health unit has reported 17 confirmed cases. There are no known active cases. The rate of cases per 100,000 population for the health unit is 352 up to Oct. 31.
  • Northwestern Health Unit reported 18 new cases and one probable case in October. That's double September's number, when nine new cases were reported. The health unit covers the Kenora region, District of Rainy River, and Sioux Lookout region. There have been 73 confirmed cases and two probable cases in the region. There are 72 recovered cases and three known active ones. The rate of cases per 100,000 population for the health unit is 83.3 up to Oct. 31.
  • The Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported 10 new cases in October, which is an increase from September when four cases were confirmed. To date, it has reported 117 cases. Of those, 113 are recovered and one person has died. There are three known active cases. The rate of cases per 100,000 population for the health unit is 78 up to Oct. 31.

Provincially, the rate of infection per 100,000 population has increased from 351.5 on Sept. 30 to 516 up to Oct. 31.
