CP cars jump the tracks in Thunder Bay (Photos)

No reports of injuries and no danger to the public, Canadian Pacific says

THUNDER BAY - Canadian Pacific Railway crews are on the scene of a derailment near a grain elevator in the Intercity area.

Just before noon on Wednesday, eight CP Railway grain cars left the tracks at the crossing on Maureen Street. The cars were returning from Viterra Grain Elevator when the derailment occurred.

Const. Evan Winslow, an officer with the CP Railway Police Service, said there were no injuries, no dangerous goods involved, and all the cars were empty at the time of the derailment.

“Because this is non-criminal in nature, the railway will be investigating themselves,” Winslow said. “There are some minor damage to the rail cars but the main infrastructure really didn’t sustain much damage.”

The cause of the derailment is under investigation. Maureen Street is closed and Winslow said there is no word yet on when the crossing will be cleared.

“The time frame can really vary with a derailment,” he said. “These are unloaded cars, but they still do weigh quite a bit. It will depend on the capabilities of our various contractors that we use for these kinds of services and what their crane capacity can be and if they can lift it or not.”

Winslow added that there shouldn’t be any impact on elevator traffic for Viterra or CP.
