A limited-time increase in the GST tax credit will help people struggling with high grocery bills and heating costs, according to Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus.
Canadians eligible for the GST cheque — a quarterly payment made to people within a certain pay threshold — will see the payment doubled for the next six months. The cheques should start being distributed on Friday, Nov. 4.
With people feeling the financial pressure of inflation, doubling the GST credit ahead of Christmas puts people in a better position to cope, said Angus in a news release.
"Minority parliaments are a huge opportunity to push progressive legislation. New Democrats get this. Mr. Poilievre doesn't. He is standing on the sidelines, trying to obstruct every initiative while we are helping to make life more affordable. The doubling of the GST tax credit is a real step forward in helping people in tough times," said Angus.
