Fatality confirmed at Sault's Algoma Steel

SAULT STE. MARIE — Ontario's Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development has confirmed that a worker has died following an incident at Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie.

The worker, who was an employee of Fountain Tire, was found unresponsive on the property last Friday, June 3.

Trell Huether, manager of issues management, media relations and correspondence at the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, confirmed the information in a statement.

"On Friday, June 3, the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development was notified of a worker who was found unresponsive at the Algoma Steel property in Sault Ste Marie," Huether said.

"EMS transported the worker to the area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

"The incident happened at Algoma Steel property and the employer is Fountain Tire."

Following the incident, a ministry inspector attended the scene and issued one order, according to the ministry.

The investigation is ongoing.
