Fun day at the beach turns a little scary for Guelph kayakers

Guelph Fire Department Water Rescue Unit helps retrieve stranded kayakers

The Guelph Fire Department's Water Rescue Unit was called into action at Guelph Lake Conservation Area Saturday afternoon to help retrieve some capsized kayakers.

Nobody was hurt in the incident. All five people were wearing life jackets. They were a little cold and sheepish once back on shore, but that was the extent of the damage.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. after an group of extended family members enjoying a day at the Guelph Lake Conservation Area main beach decided to rent kayaks.

The group - three boys and two men - rented four kayaks and set out on the lake.

But inexperience, wind and some choppy water led to the kayaks capsizing.

"We ended up in the water, but everything is okay now," said the eldest of the group, who declined to give his name or too many details.

"We ended up in the water and couldn't get to shore. So we were waving and shouting for someone to get the park people to come help us. But somebody called 911," said the man.

"But everything is okay. We're all fine."

Wellington County OPP, ambulance and Guelph Fire Department personnel all attended the scene. The five people were checked out by paramedics and given a clean bill of health before they headed back to a family picnic at the beach.
