A court has levied fines totalling $1,500 against three eastern Ontario hunters for leaving trash in a remote nature reserve northeast of Lake Nipigon.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says the incident occurred at Sedgman Lake Provincial Park in October 2016.

According to the MNRF, conservation officers received a tip that a large amount of litter had been left behind at a moose-hunting camp.

Officers from the ministry's Nipigon and Kemptville enforcement units determined that three members of a hunting party had camped at that location during an early-season hunt.

They vacated the site without removing "a significant amount" of debris including garbage, beer cans, tarps and a barbecue.

The men, all from the Ottawa region, each pleaded guilty and were fined $500 apiece for depositing litter in a provincial park.
