Police have identified the man missing after being caught in strong currents Saturday while swimming in the Ottawa River in Mattawa.

OPP say he's Arthur Lavoie, 40, of Mattawa, although a family friend says Lavoie is actually from St. Catherines.

OPP are continuing their search today.

Police say the section of river they are searching has very strong currents, varying depths, and not suitable for swimming.

The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit and the OPP Aviation Services Helicopter have joined the search along with OPP's Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), and the North Bay Detachment Marine Unit.

Witnesses told police the man was carried downstream by the current and then disappeared from sight not far from the train bridge.

Police say further details will be released as soon as they become available.
