New accessible beach mat dedication in North Bay Saturday

The new beach mat allows those using wheelchairs, and who have other mobility issues, to access and enjoy Lake Nipissing

NORTH BAY — The City of North Bay will be holding a dedication event and sign unveiling for its recently installed “Wheels to the Water” beach accessible mat this Saturday morning at the Marathon Beach, on Memorial Drive.

The ceremony starts at 10 a.m.

The new beach mat allows those using wheelchairs, and who have other mobility issues, to access and enjoy Lake Nipissing.

It has been named “Wheels to the Water” in honour of the late Adam “Wheels” Miller, who was a strong advocate for reducing barriers and making all beaches accessible to everyone. Members of Miller’s family, city officials and members of the city’s Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee will be on hand.

Miller passed away suddenly in 2016 at the age of 36.

As a member of the Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee, Miller fought long and hard to get a mat installed that would make beaches accessible to everyone.
