North Bay teen charged with careless driving in cyclist's death

The collision killed Shelby Dickey, a student athlete at Nipissing University

Back on September 1, 2019, at 9:10 a.m., North Bay OPP officers were called to investigate a motor vehicle collision on Highway 63 in North Bay between a bicycle and a passenger car.   

The cyclist was identified as 24-year-old Shelby Dickey from Grey County.

As a result of the investigation, a 17-year-old youth from North Bay has been charged with:  

  • Careless driving causing death
  • Dangerous operation causing death

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay at a later date. The driver was not injured.

Dickey was a Nipissing University student-athlete.  

At the time, the university made the announcement about the Lakers nordic skier through social media. 

"This past weekend, Shelby Dickey, a student and part of our Lakers community for a number of years, passed away in a tragic cycling accident," the Nipissing University Lakers Facebook post stated. 

"She recently completed her undergraduate degree and was to defend her Master's thesis."

A new memorial scholarship fund at Nipissing University has been established in honour of Shelby Dickey.
