North Spirit Lake First Nation man facing charges in death of two-year-old girl

A man from North Spirit Lake First Nation has been charged with negligence causing death following an investigation into the sudden death of two-year-old girl.

NORTH SPIRIT LAKE FIRST NATION, Ont. - The sudden death of a two-year-old female has led to charges against a 34-year-old man from North Spirit Lake First Nation.

An investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police was launched alongside the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service into the sudden death of a two-year-old female in North Spirit Lake First Nation on June 13, 2017.  

NAPS officers were contacted regarding the child who was brought into the nursing station where she was pronounced dead.

A post mortem was conducted by the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Forensic Pathology Service in Toronto on June 15.

Officers with NAPS and the OPP North West Region Crime Unit and Forensic Identification Services continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the girl's death. 

In a media release issued on Wednesday, OPP said the 34-year-old man from North Spirit Lake First Nation was arrested on Aug. 1 and charged with criminal negligence causing death, failing to provide the necessities of life, and child abandonment.

The accused remains in custody and is expected to make a court appearance in Kenora on Aug. 4.
