An Ottawa Valley woman has been banned from owning animals for life, after a disturbing incident involving a dog being locked in a trash bin that had been put out for roadside pickup.

Military police found a one-year-old Labrador-shepherd-type dog was found alive inside the trash bin, which had been tied shut with two bungee cords.

The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says the dog had been trapped inside the bin for several hours, but was not hurt. The dog has since been re-homed.

A criminal charge of cruelty to animals was laid against Pamela Oderkirk, 39, of Petawawa. She's been sentenced to 30 days imprisonment to be served in the community, with the first 20 days under house arrest, and a lifetime ban on owning animals. She was also ordered to pay a $500 fine to the Ontario SPCA.
