The North Bay Fire Chief is reassuring North Bay residents the smell of smoke throughout the city is not from a nearby fire, in fact, it is coming almost 100 kilometers away.

"The haze of smoke that has enveloped the city is from forest fires west of the City or from a new fire in the Parry Sound area," stated Jason Whiteley, the North Bay Fire Chief.

"There is not a fire in the North Bay area, either structural or forest."

Whiteley reminds residents that prolonged exposure to the smoke may cause individuals to experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath.

Children, seniors and those with cardiovascular and lung disease, such as asthma could be at risk.

Environment Canada issued an air quality statement for the Temagami-New Liskeard area today due to the smoke coming from nearby fires.
