Police seeking information in historic missing person case

Information being sought surrounding the 1985 disappearance of 41-year-old Carol Viau.

THUNDER BAY – City police are trying to solve the mystery surrounding the historic disappearance of 41-year-old missing person Carol Viau.

In a release issued on Tuesday, police say Wednesday will mark 32 years since the Thunder Bay woman Carol Viau was last seen, i
n the vicinity of the Salvation Army hostel on Cumberland Street North on Sept. 20, 1985.

At the time, police officers conducted a series of extensive ground searches in the city’s north side including the area around Boulevard Lake.

Despite the searches and continued investigation, Viau’s fate is still unknown.

In 1985, Viau was a voluntary patient at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital and she may have been in a confused state around the time of her disappearance.

She was not considered violent.

Viau was a mother of three but has never made any contact with her family since her disappearance.

At the time of her disappearance she was described as a 41-year-old woman, 5-foot-4, weighing 165 pounds with medium length brown hair, blue-green eyes.

She was last seen wearing a short-sleeve top, a jean jacket and white slacks.

It should be noted that Viau's appearance may have changed. Her weight fluctuated and she was known to change her hair colour from time to time.
