Sault Police smash SUV glass to assist Humane Society in rescuing two animals (2 photos)

Two dogs that were locked in a RAV4 in the Station Mall parking lot are now under the care of the Humane Society

City police officers rescued two dogs by breaking the glass of a Toyota RAV4 parked in the Station Mall parking lot, near the train station, on Sunday afternoon.

Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Staff Sergeant Norm Chartrand said someone saw the two dogs locked in the RAV4 and made a phone call to the Humane Society at 1:59 p.m.

The Humane Society subsequently called police for assistance.

Chartrand said that once on scene, police observed the window of the SUV to be open, the dogs had a bowl, but the owner of the vehicle was not around.

The Humane Society made the decision that the dogs were in distress.

Chartrand said firefighters tried to unlock the vehicle with special tools but could not, so, at 3:38 p.m. police officers broke the rear driver’s side window of the vehicle.

Once out, the Humane Society took custody of the animals.

The owners of the vehicle could not be located and so the vehicle was towed into police care in consideration of the now open window said Chartrand.

Chartrand said that as of 5:10 p.m. the owners of the vehicle had still not called police about it.

“We’re actually waiting for their call,” he said.

Chartrand said since the Humane Society originally made the call, any further action is in their hands and police are not conducting a further investigation at this time.
