Steve Lapointe was dismissed from the Timmins Police Service this morning as a hearing officer handed down his sentencing decision in a Police Services Act proceeding to decide whether or not the constable would be reinstated following a domestic assault conviction in 2015.

"In light of the seriousness of these allegations, and bearing in mind all the evidence before me, it is the decision of this tribunal that Police Contstable Steve Lapointe . . . shall be dismissed from the Timmins Police Service immediately," wrote hearing officer, Deputy Chief Terrence Kelly, in a written decision released to the media this afternoon.

Lapointe, a fourth-degree black belt, pleaded guilty to one count of discreditable conduct under the Police Services Act.

His lawyer had been seeking a demotion to second class constable for a year.

"The extent of Constable Lapointe's misconduct was to such a degree that the suitability of the officer remaining as a member of the Timmins Police Service has been nullified. He denied his Oath of Office and neither this police service nor the community it serves, can or will condone or tolerate a law enforcement officer acting in a manner described here," wrote Kelly.

"The police service, or this tribunal, cannot predict the future conduct of this officer and cannot be expected to risk another similar situation which might escalate to greater harm being done."
