A lost kayaker is safely home after being rescued in Timmins on Tuesday.

It took the combined efforts of the Timmins Police Service, the Timmins Fire Department, the Mountjoy Volunteer Fire Hall and Timmins EMS personnel to locate the paddler on Aug. 11.

The call came in about a lost kayaker at 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in the Grassy River area. Timmins Fire Department launched its rescue vessel off of Dalton Road onto the Grassy River.

"These efforts were bolstered by a comprehensive ground search headed by Timmins Police personnel involving the use of all-terrain vehicles in an effort to locate a 52-year-old female kayaker who had become separated from her party and reported as lost," police said in a news release.

The search encompassed a nine-kilometer stretch of the Grassy River and adjoining trail systems.

Thanks to the kayaker's whistle, rescuers were able to track her down by sound, and a Timmins Police officer had to climb down a 150-foot embankment and edge along a swampy area to get to the 52-year-old.

She was treated for dehydration and sun exposure.
