Two youth escape Nipissing Detention Centre

A pair of youth escaped the Nipissing Detention Centre on Pinewood Park Drive shortly before midnight Saturday but have been recaptured by police.

Police say the two assaulted two staff members of the Nipissing Detention Centre, then stole a vehicle and other items belonging to the Nipissing Detention Centre and fled in the stolen vehicle.

They were located driving on Highway 17 West.

Anishinabek Police Service, West Nipissing Police Service, and the Ontario Provincial Police all worked together. A spike belt was deployed and the two were arrested.

North Bay Police arrested and charged two youths with:

  • One count of escape lawful custody
  • One count of robbery
  • One count of assault
  • One count of choking
  • One count of mischief
  • One count of theft of motor vehicle
  • One count of possession of property obtained by crime
  • One of the youths was also charged with failing to comply with sentence

The two accused were held for a bail hearing on July 1, and they were remanded into custody.

The victims suffered non life-threatening injuries.

Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act accused can not be named.
