The continued rail blockades protesting the pipeline being built on Wet'suwet'en territory is negatively impacting the country's retail industry, according to the Retail Council of Canada.
According to the council, Canada's retail and manufacturing heavily relies on rail service and it cannot simply be replaced with transport trucks since that would be more expensive and there isn't the availability to do so.
Karl Littler of Retail Council of Canada believes the blockades impact both the storefronts and manufacturers.
"We have a bunch of fresh and time sensitive items that will likely have to be binned," Littler said.
Littler adds that the blockades affect manufacturing since key ingredients needed in processed foods and household items can not be delivered to factories.
