Elliot Lake sex offender charged with more crimes against kids

Accused was already in police custody after being arrested on Sept. 21 for failing to comply with prohibition regarding children

A convicted sex offender working as a contractor in Elliot Lake has been arrested again for multiple sexual crimes against children.

East Algoma OPP say the investigation began with complaints about a man working in homes where children were present, even though he was under a court order not to be anywhere near kids.

On Sept. 21, police arrested 40-year-old James Wickenden, also known as Jay Sloychuk, and charged him with one count of voyeurism and three counts of failing to comply with a prohibition to stay away from children.

The OPP continued to investigate, and on Oct. 4 Wickenden was arrested again — while still in custody — and charged with 22 more offences.

They include seven counts of sexual assault against someone under 16, seven counts of sexual interference, and eight counts of failing to comply with a prohibition regarding children.

Wickenden appeared in Sault Ste. Marie bail court on Thursday and was remanded into custody. None of the allegations have been tested in court and he is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
