Hundreds of thousands of Ontario frontline workers will receive a temporary pay boost from the Ontario government. The supplement is expected to cover over 350,000 eligible frontline workers in health, social services, and corrections.
"These people put themselves in harm's way to care for our sick and vulnerable citizens," said Premier Doug Ford as he announced the move on Saturday. "I am truly grateful, as are the people of Ontario, for their service, and it's time we give something back to those who sacrifice so much day in and day out."
In a release, the government said the support was "in recognition of the dedication, long hours, and increased risk of working to contain the COVID-19 outbreak."
The supplement will consist of four dollars for every hour worked, and a lump sum of $250 per month for those working over 100 hours per month. It will be in effect from April 24 to Aug. 13.
That will add up to just over $3,500 over four months for those working an average of 40 hours per week.
Those eligible include frontline staff working in acute hospitals, long-term care homes, retirement homes, emergency shelters, supportive housing, social services group homes, corrections institutions and youth justice facilities, those providing home and community care. A full list of eligible workplaces and positions is available on the Ontario government website. Management positions are not eligible.
Asked why the step hadn't been taken earlier, Ford said Ontario hadn't had the capacity to do so until recently, saying a large contribution from the federal government made the supplement possible.
