Liberal Party plan would further strengthen gun laws

Focus would be on assault weapons, high-capacity magazines and supporting provinces and territories
In this election, Canadians have a clear choice: let Erin O’Toole take us backward by putting guns back on our streets, or move forward with a real plan to keep Canadians and our communities safe.
Justin Trudeau and the Liberal team promised to get dangerous guns off our streets – and that’s exactly what we did. Now, we are moving forward to further strengthen our gun laws to protect Canadians, but Erin O’Toole is trying to stop that. He’s even promising to repeal our ban on military-style assault weapons, including AR-15s. On page 90 of his platform, Erin O’Toole says he would reverse our ban on these military-style weapons and put more guns on our streets, but he’s lying to Canadians about it.
“One Canadian killed by gun violence is one too many,” said Justin Trudeau, Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. “That’s why we made our communities safer by banning more than 1,500 types of military-style assault weapons, and we’re going to continue to strengthen our gun laws across the country. Keeping our kids and communities safe from gun violence should be an issue that we all agree on – but Erin O’Toole doesn’t. He wants to repeal our ban on these dangerous weapons and weaken our gun laws. Canadians can’t let that happen.”
A re-elected Liberal government will move forward to keep our communities safe from gun violence, by:
  • Toughening our laws on banned assault weapons by making it mandatory for owners to either sell the firearm back to the government or have it rendered permanently inoperable;
  • Cracking down on high-capacity magazines to limit the number of rounds guns can hold, and ban the sale or transfer of magazines that hold more than the legal number of bullets; and
  • Helping provinces and territories who implement a ban on handguns across their jurisdiction.

“Erin O’Toole has no plan to keep Canadians safe,” said Trudeau. “From weakening our gun laws to not requiring Canadians travelling on a train and plane to be vaccinated, he would move backward on our progress to protect Canadians. Only our Liberal team has a real plan that will keep Canadians safe and healthy, and build a better Canada for everyone.”
