Marriage Licence

A Marriage Licence can only be issued to either or both applicants.

You must be at least 16 years old to marry in Ontario. If you are under 18 years old, you must obtain written consent from both of your parents. Other restrictions may apply. Consent forms are available from the Vital Statistics Office of the City of Greater Sudbury.

Both applicants must sign a Marriage Licence Application form.

To obtain a Marriage Licence, each person getting married must present:

an original copy of their Birth Certificate, including any change of name certificates, OR

an original copy of their Valid Passport,

AND an original of one of the following documents:

Record of Immigrant Landing, Canadian Citizenship Card, Valid Driver’s Licence, Ontario Photo Card.

Please note: Ontario Health Cards and Social Insurance Number (SIN) Cards are not accepted for this purpose.
 

If you have been divorced within Canada, you must provide the original Certificate of Divorce or Decree Absolute, or a certified true copy of the same from the Court in which the divorce was granted. The Certificate of Divorce or Decree Absolute will be returned to the applicant. If you have been divorced outside Canada, please contact the Vital Statistics Office for further instructions.

The current Marriage Licence Fee is $150.00 and is non-refundable, payable by cash, credit card or debit card.

Marriage Licences are issued from the Vital Statistics Office of Clerk's Services, 2nd Floor, Tom Davies Square, 200 Brady Street, Sudbury, first come, first served, or by appointment at any Citizen Service Centre. Hours to obtain a Marriage Licence are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Mondays to Fridays. Please allow 15 minutes to process your application.

The marriage ceremony must take place within three months of the date of issue of the Marriage Licence.

Please note that all marriage licences are issued in accordance with the Marriage Act and the rules and guidelines set out by the Office of the Registrar General.
