Resolution discussions are ongoing in the case of a Greater Sudbury Police officer charged with impaired driving in 2020.

Const. Thomas Van Drunen was off duty the morning of Nov. 13 when he was stopped and charged.

He is being represented by defence lawyer Terry Waltenbury. His matter has been adjourned for two weeks, to May 12, to allow those discussions to continue.

Van Drunen began with the Greater Sudbury Police Service in April 2020. Under the Police Service Act of Ontario, Van Drunen has been suspended from duty with pay.

A disciplinary hearing will take place following the conclusion of his court proceedings.

“Pursuant to section 83(15) of the Police Services Act (PSA), the regional counsel of the Office of the Director of Crown Operations has requested a stay of the Police Services Act proceedings until the completion of the Criminal Code matter,” said GSPS on its website.

The request was granted by the hearing officer (Ret.) Superintendent Peter Lennox.
