Greater Sudbury poet laureate Kim Fahner launching her fourth book of poetry Oct. 21

'Some Other Sky' inspired by writer's love of nature

As she reaches the home stretch of her term as Greater Sudbury's poet laureate, Kim Fahner is launching her fourth book of poetry this month.

Featuring cover art by local artist Trish Stenabaugh, “Some Other Sky” is published by Windsor's Black Moss Press.

Fahner is holding a book launch party at St. Andrew's Place starting at 7 p.m. Oct. 21. Local band The Wild Geese will be playing traditional Irish and Scottish tunes.

“I'm really excited,” she said.

“It's a beautiful little book. It's work that's been done over the last five years. There's a lot of Sudbury area poems, but there's also poems from when I was travelling out to BC, down to Pelee Island for writing and out to Scotland.”

Fahner, who started her two-year term as the city's poet laureate in early 2016, said she's also recently completed a novel, and she's currently trying to find a publisher.

A nature lover who jokes about hugging trees, Fahner's poetry features allusions to images such as her beloved trees, as well as water, stars and birds.

“They reflect the landscape in which I live or where I'm travelling,” she said.

As poet laureate as well as in her day job as an English teacher at Marymount Academy, Fahner tries to combat people's negative views of poetry.

“You can pick up a poetry book, read one poem, put it down and come back to it later,” she said. “It's not like you're committing to it for hours on end. You can dip into it and come back out. It can be enjoyable.”

Copies of the book can be purchased for $18 at the launch party and afterwards at One Sky on Durham Street or through Fahner's website.
