Given she's originally from Sudbury, it's a bit of a surprise that roots musician Mimi O'Bonsawin has never played at the Townehouse Tavern, the popular downtown Sudbury live music venue.

O'Bonsawin, who now lives in Toronto, figured it was about time to remedy the situation.

Accompanied by band members Dave Patel and Ian De Souza, she's playing a show at the Townehouse this Thursday, July 19.

“It's a legendary place,” O'Bonsawin said. “I'm pretty excited to finally get there. It's crazy. It just never worked out or something, but I've been wanting to play there.”

The 24-year-old graduate of Collège Notre Dame often writes of her love of Northern Ontario, as well as her aboriginal roots.

Although she grew up here, her cultural background is French Canadian and Abanaki (her family's reserve is in Quebec).

O'Bonsawin's first album, Mimi, was released in 2014. Her second, Connected, came out last year.

O'Bonsawin said she's been pretty busy ever since, even touring India earlier this year. People there were really welcoming, she said. “Our shows were pretty full,” O'Bonsawin said.

Doors to O'Bonsawin's Townehouse show open at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $15.
