On June 16 (yes, tomorrow), the Human League Association hosts its 10th annual Soapbox Derby at the Southridge Mall in the back parking lot, near the TSC Hardware entrace.

As it has every year for the past decade, the family friendly event raises funds for the Human League’s PLAY (for Positive Leisure Activities for Youth) Program.

Did you know one of every three children can’t afford to participate in organized sports? That is why, for nearly 20 years, the Human League Association has been raising money, sponsoring local children with the cost of their extra-curricular activities. That’s where the PLAY Program comes in, having helped more than 250 local children over the years.

It’s too late to register for the Soapbox Derby. The deadline was June 12. But spectators are welcome to come out, enjoy the day and cheer on the racers.

Racers are reminded that all cars must be on-site by 8 a.m. for inspection. Races start at 9 a.m. All registered participants will race throughout the day, but official times will be recorded for three races only to calculate average race times for every participant. The average will be used to calculate final results and winners in Youth/Hobby category (ages 7 to 16, under 180 lbs total weight of car and driver) and Open/Adult class (over 16 years of age and over 180 lbs total weight of car and driver).

For spectators and racers alike, there will be vendors, washroom facilities, first-aid, security and many volunteers on-site to ensure the day runs smoothly and effortlessly, but mostly to ensure that everyone has a great time!

Parking is available for everyone on-site and near the track, but families are encouraged to bring their own chairs and shade tents to watch the races in comfort.
